Daggerheart: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly!

The setting seems awesome but yeah I think I will definitely need the right players for this. Also scared of not doing it justice but I think it could be interesting regardless

You saying non-linear equations and stats that aren’t in base ten aren’t fun? What kind of a geek are you?

Wait, hold up, I need to get to my bookie! The odds on this are going to be crazy!

The betting houses are in shambles!

Yes. This is a game to be very careful with.

I played Ironsworn a bit during lockdown-times

that is also a nice PbtA game … also it is free

Blades in the Dark is also a solid PbtA game … played that a few times

So the thing with Alice is: The rules - the system and mechanics - aren’t that great. Some of this stuff is pretty murky.

But the central idea is excellent, and it tells good, new stories that other RPGs don’t. And I think that’s worth something - more than games that just follow in well-trodden footsteps, rehash somebody else’s stories, and add some new rules. To me, that stuff is pretty dull. A new game needs to have new ideas.

When we see the user name change to Nail, I’ll be very worried.

:robot: AI DM on D&D Beyond coming when …

Totally different discussion (although this has long since turned into a free-for-all thread), but I’ve been thinking about that quite a bit. What exactly can we do as human DMs that AIs won’t be able to do soon? Not that easy to answer …

Where are the mods? Forums aren’t what they used to be! :frowning:

Down with the mods! Worthless bunch of … whoops, never mind.

I have played blades and ran it once but not often enough for a value judgement. The main problem I have found is that I couldn’t stop my players from trying to min max and play a game again. And blades in the dark doesn’t want you to min max it’s baked in.

There’s no definitive right way to play an RPG but there are some wrong ones. And I think a lot of the ways to play DND are the wrong ones in pbta. We need to get to the point where playing these games is more like a guided conversation you are having I think but yeah will report back once I have ACTUALLY read the rules and ran these games a bunch of times

Who watches the watchers kind of situation

I will never, ever be able to read this without inserting an expletive.

Hang on, am I the last one here? Can I sneak in the last word? Sweet! OK, here we go, the final word:

Marketing. :stuck_out_tongue:

heya, since I was tagged here thought I’d drop in just to offer my two cents.

for context I’ve been running 5e for over 10 years now and have run and played in daggerheart games since it’s inception 2 years ago. I still run both games in different playgroups and have great fun with each of them although my 5e playgroup is currently experimenting with the 2024 rules (we’ll see how that goes not mega optimistic but we’ll see).

A lot of good things have already been said that break down daggerhearts mechanics however I feel that specifically some of the things that it does brilliantly, specifically focusing on building characters and how they work in combat have not been pointed out.

The typical divide between martial characters and spellcasters which is incredibly large in every form of DnD that I know of feels miniscule in daggerheart. the fact that the cards are both spells and abilities bridges this gap incredibly well, imo.

The other thing I wanted to point out is that some characteristic fantasy character build tropes (tank, support, dps) have been made to feel much much closer to what you would imagine them to play like than they do in most other systems I have played. A tank build truly feels like you can just stand as a shield in the front. if you build a supportive build there’s multtiple ways to go about that, since there are multiple forms of ressources that everyone is constantly spending and regaining and the powerfantasy of the blaster caster is just as sick as the assassin that can solo oneshot incredibly difficult foes.

Again I want to add to all the correct statements that have already been made about the system the positive and the negative

If you ever wanna come and try it out, we are currently running a westmarches campaign in the system with (currently) 4 different gms taking turns at the reigns and it has been incredible fun and we’d love every new player who wants to try the system out.

Bc as everyone here has said playing a game at least 1-3 times is how you truly get a feel for it.

It lets you make video game characters?

It let’s you make characters that are good at specific things and makes them actually good at those things, thus fun to play.

I guess you could interpret that at as something video gamey, but honestly I do not see the point bc things like Baldurs gate, disco elysium, esoteric ebb, xcom and anything Owlcate games makes exist. So the line between ttrpgs and videogamss has been blurred for a long time.
