Daggerheart: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly!

Maybe that’s part of why I think this is a bit of a let-down. Alice was innovative and clever, the right game for its time, and let you tell stories that other games didn’t. Just a total bull’s-eye of a game (or story generation framework, or whatever).

I’ve still yet to play a PbtA game

Love this

Agreed! I’d add “Rolling to find/do anything (if it’s integral to the story)”

Forums forever  well…hopefully!

Thanks for all the replies! I haven’t done any TT gaming for a while but last time got into some wonderful OSR adjacent stuff.

I’d be up for trying it some time (as well as other stuf) but it’d have to be online via Discord voice/foundry/owlbear etc. rather than in person

We all love you, too. :slightly_smiling_face:

I have two pbta games ordered actually. Night witches and the harren just to see what that is like. Got a little bit of a taste for it after Daggerheart

Play Alice play Alice play Alice.

Best game I’ve seen at turning not playing in person into an advantage. This is the good stuff.

Ah yes horrible…this fish? Terrible at climbing these trees.

It is a heroic, narrative-focused experience that features combat as a prominent aspect of play.

It excels at that goal if you are willing to engage with it’s systems

agree :100: Alice is Missing is really, really great (deals with some heavy stuff though)

ViewScream is also a game that turns the online disadvantage into an advantage btw.

kinda disagree that it is narrative focused (depends on perspective I guess  )

but is nice and does its niche well

would rather say it is heroic fantasy that focuses on dramatic outcomes of character actions

The term narrative-focused has become pretty meaningless, anyway, hasn’t it? Seems like just about every game describes itself as narrative-focused these days.

It’s kinda like the mid-90s when everything was alt except Madonna.

I was this close :pinching_hand: to playing it that one time on here! maybe it’s time for another go in the near future? I played a few sessions of Mothership and that really clicked with me <3

Alice also sounds really interesting.

it is a really good game :+1:

Mothership was pretty cool we had some sessions at value and it’s been fun!

for others who might stumble upon this thread

Mothership’s amazing. Played it with some Discord groups. Started a new Android character at one point based on Kryten from Red Dwarf fully expecting him to die immediately. He survived three entire sessions. He’s still alive!

Hey, even you aren’t calling it a game now! :stuck_out_tongue:

(Nobody’s taking this too seriously, right? We’re just bantering here.)

Neil: The reason I think it’s somewhat incoherent is that the DM’s role isn’t well-defined, and can wind up being a choice between adversarial and pushover, which isn’t a great spot for a DM to be in.

Anyway, try it yourself. Better yet, try it with cat!

We played this once in this group ages ago. Very interesting. Maybe not quite as impactful as I had hoped, but that was probably my fault for not doing it justice.

That’s nice to hear. What part clicked for you? I filed this under: fine, but just telling the same stories Traveller told four decades earlier.

… with less math

I got a little defensive there but yes it was jest. ^^

Honestly I already have a lot of people playing the system with me and or running it Fridays I’m already very happy especially with Chris Perkins working on the new setting at some point down the line.

I just feel there’s legitimate criticisms for daggerheart but they are not pointed out instead people who never gave the system an honest shot by embracing the vibe are critiquing it for the wrong things.

But yeah too long a message again I’m going to stop for now lol

Maybe I should start a new thread? Two posts in a year? :joy:
