Open game at the Spielbar: Thursday the 24th of July

Well, folks…
As suggested, I’d like to celebrate the release of the newest edition of the original RPG by a themed evening: “D&D: old and new”

Harald will be in charge of the old, a first edition game.

For my part, I am planning on offering an introduction to the new, using the 5th Edition starter kit.
I will be bringing the kit as well as a printout of the basic rules.
In the kit are 5 pre-gen characters, but I will also bring a few blank character sheet so that people can prepare their own characters if they are so incline (it is actually pretty fast and straightforward, in part because the system is still new and streamline with only a few options to chose from).

The adventure itself is pretty interesting. It is also quite big so we might need to revisit it at some point, if people are interested, of course…

I might also rerun the adventure itself if more people want to try it than we can accommodate on one go…

I’m very interested in what the final version looks like on the gaming-table. So I’d like to join the D&D next group.

I’d love to participate.
Whether old school or new shit I don’t care!
Maybe this time I can convince my friend to join in.
Dibbs on the cleric!

Sadly work has booked my Thursday night. But, this is directed at “H”, I’ll be back!

I’ll be there, and interested in 5th ed “Next”… however, since -H- also runs pretty awesome old-school D&D games, I’m torn once more… and might ultimately have to resort to a dice roll to make the final decision for me again

Cool; well, we still have a couple spots available, although these seem to be dwindling…

One thing I just thought off, though, is that H mention being interested in playing it. In this case we might conceivably need another DM to animate a second table…

Hm, since Alrik and me would also like to play it… any volunteers to GM a 2nd table?

Also, what’s your maximum player number for this, Simon?

I have 5 pre-gen already.
I’d say up to 6 if people want to roll their own character…

I’d rather not overload the party, though, especially as the idea is to play 5th “as it’s meant to be played”…

Appreciate the thought, but since so many people want to play this, I’ll happily stand back and wait for the re-run.

For all the poor stragglers who aren’t fortunate enough to snag a seat at Simon’s table this week, I’ll offer an old-school alternative. This will be either AD&D or Basic, and could serve as an optional prolog to a longer campaign. And just to offer a bit of incentive to those who miss out on the big Next launch, there’ll be a twist that I’m guessing most of you won’t have experienced before.

See you on Thursday!

What, we still haven’t scared you off?

I’m interested in ‘next’ as ‘previous’ didn’t really grab my attention…but ‘preeeeeeeeevious?’ now that I can get into! what? Star Wars has just been released? We’re playing in ‘moms basement’ and characters that you can roll in less time that it takes to choose a feat in Pathfinder? oh, go on then!

tl;dr As Simon’s ‘next’ table seems to be filling up quicker than… [something that fills up extremely quickly] I’ll opt for H’s table this week (if he’ll let me!) although, if I could play both of them simultaneously I would!

EDIT: this seems like a perfect topic to ‘sticky’ for a week…it’s a shame that I didn’t [url=http://rpgvienna.com/t/say-hello-to-the-mods/430/1 some recent moderators to make this possible[/url]…ahem

You’ll have to try harder. However is does hurt me greatly knowing I will miss the opportunity to experience mentioned “twist”.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear.
My thought was, because you were talking about joining the re-run, all things being equal, it might be a good idea to organise ourselves so that not all the usual DM end up in the same group.
If many potential DMs end up being players on the same day as you, that might make DMing the other table tricky…

Your characters have been impaled on their own blade, devoured by a fish, burnt to a crisp and turned into an inanimate object, and you want me to try harder? :astonished:

I planned to come but I forgot that I’m not gonna be in Vienna that day. So until next week.

Good times! If you want to get me you will have to wait until I’m attached to my character which usually takes a few sessions with the same character. So good luck.

Ah, gotcha. I wasn’t thinking about future constellations …

Incidentally, I think we ought to give a big hand to Simon for running this. This release is the biggest thing to happen in roleplaying this year, and it’s cool that our little group is getting in on the action.

YEAH SIMON!

… and I’ll gladly run something for another table if and when the re-run ties up too many of our other GMs! Since by then I’ll already have been in on the Next action presumably

That’d be this week, then, presumably, if H is on the next go…

And, nothing to it, I am very curious to try it…

Time for a sneak preview of this week’s action: Not only will we see the contrast between old and new, but also two solutions to an old problem.

Perhaps the greatest complaint about old school D&D was that first level characters seemed very weak. Magic-users, in particular, with a d4 hit points and one spell per day (oo, light!), were often the focus of such comments.

Fifth edition addressed this issue in a logical, player-friendly manner: by simply increasing the power of low level characters. Wizards now have more hit points, more spells, and can also use cantrips, as powerful as several former spells, as often as they choose.

But similarly to measuring height with a barometer, there is always more than one solution to a problem. The old school game will be looking at the other solution …

See you on Thursday!
