we also allow (new) players to start with new level 5 (T2) characters, as you can read in our V.A.L.U.E. rules posted here
Should you have been new to DnD, which both of you aren’t as far as I know, starting at level 1 would not have been bad, to slowly ease you into the DnD-Rules.
