Open D&D Table - Episode 143: Marching In

I will never understand why some modules give away key surprises in their titles.

It’s baffling. You have all kinds of mysterious goings-on, disappearances and reappearances and odd characters galore, red herrings like rumors of vampires to keep the players guessing … and it says ‘Against the Cult of the Reptile God’ right on the cover. Gee, I guess it wasn’t vampires …

Sigh.

That aside, this is a fun module, the original village with weird happenings caused by a nearby evil that so many modules have imitated. If you only ever play one of these, play this one. There are some handholdy bits - it’s intended for beginners - but if you remove those, it’s a good challenge with some serious teeth.

one of my favorite “old and still good” adventure modules :slight_smile:
ran it a few times (3-times I think :sweat_smile:)

was always a blast :smiley:

I think just about all of the ones that were good in ye olde days are still good, aren’t they? At least the ones from this era. A couple like Temple of Elemental Evil may have been reevaluated and considered to be not all that, but most of that stuff has held up really well.

Discovering that we have a playlist was simultaneously the most surprising and the least surprising thing to happen to me in recent weeks.

Wow, I don’t even remember using some of that stuff.

In any case, this is just a bit of fun. No need to pay any attention to any of this. Only occasionally are major clues to the game hidden within.

for every “The Forest Oracle” there was a “Beyond the Crystal Cave” :grin:

Or seen a different way when looking at those two modules: That run from '78-'83 was incredible. By '84, some cracks started to show.

D&D’s golden age only lasted so long.

To quote Nietzsche (and summarize the last session): “God is dead”
