Hello everyone!
I want to share a new Tabletop RPG that I’m creating with you.
What is Freegliders? Freegliders is a (work in progress) TTRPG set in a fantasy world that is based on a Steampunk Victorian era (~1800s). The system itself takes inspiration from all kinds of other similar systems, most notably D&D and Shadowrun, but many features I came up with on my own, although I’m sure it has all been done before, just not in this combination and manner (to my knowledge).
Why make yet another TTRPG? I have found myself in recent years looking for a way to play a Steampunk adventure set in a Steampunk world. My first instinct was to modify existing systems to fit the deed, but then I thought it would make more sense to create something new that fits this “niche” more nicely and was actually created with this purpose in mind. Also, it gives me the opportunity to create a system that inherits all the features from other systems that I feel work while modifying or discarding those that I don’t like and introducing my own.
How does Freegliders work? Freegliders is a d20 System that D&D 5e players will have an easy time getting into, because at its core it works very similarly. It has no classes and instead characters derive their abilities and features from skill ranks. I put heavy emphasis on non-exclusive skills here, so you can really mix and match anything you like.
Where can people find Freegliders?
So, the system is still in its early development stages, but I have already started with Playtests and have gotten a few of them in. I just built a Community Server on Discord that will be my primary way of interacting with the community, gathering feedback, discussing changes and issues, and sharing the roadmap and updates. I currently keep the Character Sheet, System Handbook and other documents in a Google Drive that I share publicly. I am developing the system in there as well. The link is on the Discord, but I can send it to you or add it here on request.
The Community Discord Server can be found here: Freegliders Steampunk TTRPG
Google Drive Folder with Handbook, Character Sheet and more: Freegliders Steampunk TTRPG Drive
Why am I here and not somewhere more global? Because I’m still in a very early development stage of the system. I don’t feel like I’m ready for a big audience yet, but my playtests have shown me that constant feedback keeps me motivated and also provides me with critical insight on things I missed. And boy, are there a lot of things I would have missed without that feedback.
So, if you’re interested in helping me out, let me know! Join the Discord Server for more info. I am open to running another weekly Playtest session with people outside of my personal nerd circle, ranging from people completely new to TTRPGs all the way to the veterans with decades of experience. (I myself am approaching my first decade of experience, so I really value the insight of more experienced players and GMs) I want to start building up an Early Access Community slowly, so I want to start with the local community that I can access physically as well as online.
Lastly, I want to make one thing clear: This is a passion project first and foremost. I do not aim to make money from this. I plan on releasing the finished system and any expansions for free in PDF format, but I will license it in a way that makes sure nobody can ruin the intended “this is supposed to be free, fun, and close to the community” ethic. I might use that license to offer printed copies for money on release, but I really want to make sure there is a way to play the game for free without missing out on any content, which free PDFs should achieve.
Cheers, Marc
