So I leveled up my Paladin to lvl2 in DnD Beyond, and also installed basic rules 2014, but when I try to pick Divine Smite, it counts as the 2024 version (the one with the bonus action). Is there any way I can change to the 2014 one without having to purchase the player’s handbook 2014?
Is it possible that there’s no difference in divine smite between the editions? I get no indicator for version in divine smite on the spell sheet (it’s on the first page with the abilities and feats and everything). When looking for spells, I can choose an “old” thing (indicated by “legacy” or a “new” thing.
edit: Oh, I see, there is a difference with something about bonus action. Sorry, didn’t read that the first time round In that case no idea sorry
I don’t even see the legacy version.
In 2014 Divine Smite was a Class Feature, not a spell. So I’m afraid you need access to the 2014 PHB on dndeyond. If you join a DM’s campaign and they have the 2014 PHB purchased on dndbeyond, they can share that content with you so you can use it for your characters in that campaign.
The main difference before the 2024 PHB was, that Divine Smite could be used once per hit, not once per turn! Whenever you hit an enemy with a melee weapon attack, you could spend a Spell Slot to use Divine Smite. It wasn’t considered casting a spell at all, but it did count as magic since it consumed a spell slot and therefore could be affected by Dispel Magic or Antimagic Field.
Since it is a levelled spell now (level 1+) you can only cast it once per turn and only on your turn too because it’s a Bonus Action.
in that case, I’ll try to send you a link so you can see if it works then… .
There are more differences to the paladin than just the smite (like Lay On Hands being a bonus action, weapon masteries, subclass abilities), so playing a 2024 paladin with the 2014 smite would not work on D&D Beyond. However, you can of course create a paladin using the 2014 rules (and multiclass with a 2024 class, take 2024 feats and spells… - but for VALUE everything needs to be 2014), and you don’t need the 2014 PHB for that. Just check “Legacy” on the settings page (first step) when creating or editing the character:
And when you choose your class, scroll down until you find the legacy classes:
Also, if you want free access to the books on D&D Beyond, maybe someone who has the books is willing to set up a content sharing campaign there? On Reddit (dndnext), we have a weekly thread specifically for these content sharing links.
