Interest Check: ALIEN RPG

As there was quite a bit of interest when I ran the system for the first time I though I’d check in to see how many people are currently interested in trying it out.

It was a ton of fun so I am certainly eager to run some more sessions and learn to utilise the system better. :alien:

For those of you who have never heard of it and are wondering what the sysyem is about:

The ALIEN RPG is a sci-fy/horror roleplaying game based in the same universe/setting as the Ridley Scott “Alien” movies.

The way I usually describe the setting: It is a capitalist dystopia taking place about ~200 years in the future. Humanity has managed to spread out from our current solar system and now inhabits quite a few planets/systems. While one may expect fancy future tech to be commonplace, for it does exist (laser-rifles, power armor, fiercely intelligent androids, etc.) 99,9999% of people will never own any of these things because they are incredibly expensive.
The ones who can afford these items are incredibly wealthy and usually care more about their own bottom line, rather than the wellbeing of their empolees.

The system is split into two different styles of play:

  • Campaign Mode: Where the PCs are part of a colony on the outskirts of human-space or the crew of space-truckers trying survive and maybe even thrive while dealing with narrow profit magins, broken/old machinery and lots of squalor in general. (More chill - long lasting) (I haven’t tried this yet)
  • Cinematic Mode: Where PCs encounter horrible situations where the odds of survival are heavily stacked against them. One example for such a scenario would be the plot of the first alien movies → Space Truckers vs. Xenomorph (Horror - Stress - Panic! - lasts 1-3 sessions)
→ this is the style used for Oneshots

The gameplay is d6 based and very easy to learn for beginners. (explaining the basic rules takes at most 30 mins. - most of which happens during play)

What Oneshots am I planning to run?
So far I’ve tried out Chariot of the Gods, which was excellent, so I would really like to re-run it for another group.
I’ve also got Hope’s Last Day, but I’d need to read into it a bit further before I’m ready to run that one.

Now. With the introduction out of the way my question is simple: Are any you interested in trying out the system?

If you are, please reply to this post so I can gauge how many sessions I should plan for in the long run. (each Oneshot session requires 3-5 players)

Time/Location wise I was planning to run future sessions on Fridays, during the regular VALUE sessions at WoW-Keepers (but I am open to discussing other locations/playtimes if Fridays simply don’t work for any of you).

List of people who voiced interest in the past but haven’t had the chance to try the system yet:
@Tiero @cat4laugh @Kirgul

It was really fun last time and it will be again. Consider me interested

I’m still super interested! But it depends when the game happens. (This week I have to pass, unfortunately, as I’m battling bronchitis :face_with_thermometer: )

Well count me interested, when you are running Hope’s Last Day

Looks interesting, but I think the system is too alien for me to get into it…

Looks like we’ve got more than enough interest. I probably won’t have time this week but possibly next week. Also considering that some of you have already played Chariot of the gods I will also take a look at Destroyer of Worlds which is the continuation of Chariot of the gods. (all about Space Marines fighting aliens with big guns)

Update: I will be there this friday to run ALIEN. (at WoW-Keepers)
If there are enough players I will run:

  • Chariot of the Gods (if all the players are new)
  • Hope’s last day (if we have a mix of old and new players)
  • Destroyer of Worlds (if we have mostly experienced players)

(this post is just here to ping you guys)

I can’t go this Friday, but I would love to keep playing in the next sessions!

False alarm guys. Schedule conflicts will prevent my prep-work this week. :man_facepalming:

We’ll get back to it soon though. I promise :+1:

This time for real though. (I double checked everything)

If enough people are interested I’d be thrilled to run some ALIEN adventures again. If we get a group together I’ll post more info about the potential scenarios. :+1:

We started playing the “Destroyer of Worlds” scenario today, and will continue it next friday (1.11.).

@cat4laugh @Kenta @Mexikorn will have priority seating but we still have 2 slots open for other players to join.

As this is the longest scenario yet, I’ll run this as a hop-on hop-off mini-campain. So anyone can join at any time, but every game will have a max. of 5 players. If more than 5 people sign up the player with more sessions played so far will get priority. (I will keep track of this)

Also: To keep track of what’s happened so far. There will be a player (or GM) written summary after each session. If a player writes that summary they will gain 1 story point. (I will attach the summaries to my usual ALIEN introduction post in the VALUE thread, so new players can keep up and jump right into the action)

I’m just following so far as my fridays get booked up.

Summary: Destroyer of Worlds Scenario Session 1

A four man squad went AWOL on Ariarcus, as such the three of us Dante, Iona and me Mason were pulled from our original missions to clean up the mess. Iona is a sweetheart and successfully talked down a hostage situation in the oblivion bar. Though we had to let the guy with the connection to the insurgence escape, sadly. Dante is also a sweetheart, albeit a heavily armed one, she’s got us a connection to the port through a freight pilot. Of course with the lockdown nobody is allowed to leave which the insurgents took as an opportunity to send a man with a dead man’s switch. Both of the times I initiated the conversation, both times, I could see the fear in their eyes, like they knew they were in way over their heads but couldn’t turn back. We stopped them, but instead of answers, we’re left with more questions—a mystery that only seems to deepen…Ariarcus is a powder keg waiting to blow, and every step we take might be the spark.
