I’m new and excited to be here! As an ancient boomer in my 30s, I joined to meet new people and hopefully dive into some fun games. I have little to no experience with Dungeons & Dragons (played once a few years ago), but I’d love to give it another shot—and maybe even explore other RPGs along the way.
I’m from Vienna, so I’m also looking forward to meeting people who are local and maybe even playing in person sometime!
Welcome! If you wanna join some one-shots, we play weekly at two locations on Friday and one on Saturday. Just look for the threads with VALUE in the title!
I think that’s alright too, yeah. At least I don’t recall it not being allowed.
Though I can tell you from experience (I only join about half a year ago with zero prior knowledge too) that everyone is usually pretty understanding and open to help you out with how things work, so if you wanna join on your first visit, there’s nothing against that
People do come and watch games sometimes. I would agree with Jules that for the most part, people have an easy time jumping right into the game, and having new players at tables is something most of us are used to.
This could be just me, but for me, watching creates one of two situations:
Either you have a silent observer, so you ask all the players if it’s okay that they’re being observed, and I think it’s one of those situations where no one will say no, because why would they, even though they might not be entirely comfortable. As a silent observer, you also don’t have an opportunity to ask questions or really interact with people.
Or you have an observer who is actually actively participating, asking questions, and engaging with the table- which feels disruptive to the game. Also, I think once you start playing yourself, it’s a different experience anyway.
So I, personally, would discourage observing without playing, but I totally understand if you and others feel safer just stopping by to watch first. I also wanted to watch first before I started playing, but ended up asking myself if I would feel comfortable if I was being watched playing by a random person and ended up just showing up and playing.
The locations we play at have a small fee, at Wowkeepers it‘s free the first 3 times and 6€ after that; at Requisite it’s 4€ (no free trial). In either case you can bring food and drinks if you want!
thank you for your replies and pricing clarifications!
sorry for another noob question, but i’m too stupid to find it on my own here… is there some kind of “howto”/“what to do before your first dnd session, a-z”? like what do i have to prepare?!
All you really need to prepare is a character sheet (though you can also come earlier if you need help with it), at least one set of die and that’s pretty much all!
If you already have a character, see if you understand the abilities and feel free to make notes on your character sheet.
If you don’t have a character, think about the kind of character you might want to play and show up early, or @BufoBufo has also offered guidance in creating characters online. Or you can ask here or in the discord, there’s usually someone who can help.
You can watch actual play shows like critical role or youtube videos (I like ginny di) about what to expect going into your first session if you want to prepare , but bear in mind that all those guys are professionals at what they do, which means it’s best not to expect everything you see to apply at Value.
Dice are helpful, but usually you can borrow or roll on your phone if you want to test it out first.
What confuses me right now: is the Friday meeting in 1030 more “usual”/regular/the one i should go to, or the one in 1150?! Which one is “the” real one?
They’re both “real”, as in they’re both our usual meetups. We have two locations where our value games happen on Fridays, so you can choose based on which adventure(s) sound more fun, or which is closer, or however else you wanna decide
We have two venues because we ran out of space at just the 1150 one - now folk go to whichever suits them - there are some regulars at each location and a big group that bounces over and back week on week.
