Hi, Efe! I will pipe up as someone who frequents DnD and loves to know far too much about this kind of game genre (heroic fantasy is the most popular but dark fantasy, whimsy and horror are all within the bones of Dungeons and Dragons).
DnD is a fun time, where everyone tries to hallucinate together to forget the mundane world and rejoice in tasks that can never be done in real life. A single person leads the game on (Dungeonmaster) and the rest are the players of the chosen adventure (who get to make all the decisions and basically create the plot).
The math-rocks, or âdiceâ, serve to give us answers to unknowns. I.e: how long do we sleep until something startles us and makes us perk up in the night? I want to make a guard believe that I am one of his relatives twice removed and here to cash in on the inheritence, thus being allowed into the âfamily homeâ and, by extension, the city itself. How well did I do during the first impression phase? Hey, I attack that monster! How much of its willingness to fight us did I knock out of it?
That stuff is solved with dice or the Dungeonmaster (who often has perfect information) makes a ruling.
The game thrives on what you bring to it. My advice: bring a character you enjoy spending time as. The rest will follow, because that way you can never go wrong and will always âwinâ at DnD, no matter how the adventure turns out. Itâs how I do it, and I cherish almost all my time in DnD. So copy my homework if you want.
LastlyâŚhow to learn about DnD⌠you kind of need to read into what the internet or books have in store for you. Wiki pages, someoneâs rhetoric in blogs/forums, Youtube content is endless,âŚ
If you want DnD-esque recommendations: Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Conan the Barbarian novels, Bartimäus, Eragon, Peter V. Brettâs âDemon Cycleâ. Star Wars, Dune, Perry Rhodan, He-Man and other space operas are similar in type, only the location mostly wonât be in space.
Enjoy the learning experience and feel free to ask around.
As for groups, if youâre new I think itâs best just to join the open tables that happen on Fridays.
Just looking for threads that have âV.A.L.U.E.â in their title and ârequisiteâ or âwowkeepersâ in their tags (thatâs the name of your two locations we meet at).
When you have time, then write in the thread(s) for the next Friday, say youâre a new player, say if you need help creating a character or more and Iâm sure there will be someone willing to help you set up for your very first game with us ![]()
I agree on the best way to learn D&D is to play D&D ![]()
I also liked Ginny Diâs YouTube series for absolute beginners.
Yup, just dive in and play!
(And if you do dive into the Interweb for advice and information, just be aware that there are an awful lot of bad takes out there.)
So, in my opinion:
- You already know some rpgs, such as BG3 (which has similar rules to the dnd 5e). That is good. You might have to get used to doing some stuff the computer normally does for you, but you have the basic understanding.
- So best thing is to dive in. Get to one of the open games if you want some dnd 5e. They are run with the name VALUE in the title and are always on Fridays, most of the time in two locations at the same time. Just drop a line that you are coming, and if you need help with character creation, just say so, and we will help. Donât worry we often get new people.
- Donât worry too much about knowing all the rules. You can easily learn as you go and no one knows all rules all the time, so donât worry too much.
- It is more important to know the basic premises of many RPGs, which are: You are here to have fun, you are cooperating with your fellow players, and the DM is playing your antagonists but is not your antagonist.
- You can also check out some other games, if you wish to. New settings, new rules, can be pretty nice.
So in total, take your time, have some fun, and donât take it too seriously. We are all nerds, playing some games, and telling stories.
just show up on fridays, pick a table, create a character (people will be glad to help), and dive in. donât think too much about it. I started out from BG3 as well and it will just come naturally and turn into loads of fun pretty soon.
