DM collaboration

A message to all the DM’s in this group,

I am DMing myself and am looking for another DM that is interested in having a brainstorming partner. The idea would be to meet every second week (more or less), helping one another with prep work etc.

Some stuff about me and my campaign:

My biggest interest in DMing is how to design immersive experiences for both the players and myself. I love the feeling where we are all fully immerse in the characters/NPCs and time flies as we play.

I have been DMing for the last 1.5 years two 5E campaigns. I used to play and DM as a kid with the BECMI versions. My current game is a lot about character development, story telling and world building. So my strengths are in plotting, building NPCs (and improvising them in the table) and creating interesting layered stories.

What I can definitely improve is combat design and systems design for stuff like making traveling, hexcrawling etc. more interesting for the players.

Last thing, recently I fell into the rabbit hole of miniature painting, which is not as important as all the above but still part of my own fun preparing for sessions.

If anyone is interested in such exchange, can write me here or on Discord (@matan.levkowich)

Hi Matan

sounds great

“time is as always the killer” - but I think we will manage to find a slot

Might be interested in joining but depends on time.

I have been running multiple campaigns and currently running 1,5 and prepping for another.

I am pretty invested in world building, history and culture. For me this often means that things look easy and simple on the outside and then become more complex when you look at it. Also have a massive love for symbolism, parallels and deconstruction/reconstruction narratives.

Anything in particular vexing you? I don’t have time for bi-weekly meetings (and would rather spend that time playing games if I did), but happy to try help brainstorm any specific issues.

The easiest way to make D&D more interesting is always: make it more difficult.

If you’re already familiar with Basic, you could just go with that. D&D started trivializing travel and exploration way back in 1st ed (see Create Water), but Basic retained the original rules which made survival in the wild challenging and interesting.

Might also solve the combat design difficulties by moving away from tactical combat.

Nice. I imagine something like a monthly meeting, where each DM can bring forth some ideas they want to hear a second opinion or further develop.

I don’t have any specific issue. I just think it can be fun and creative to share some of my prep time with another DM as two brains will probably produce better ideas than one brain…

we could do a monthly evening online call in the RPG Vienna discord, to bounce off current ideas

That sounds awesome.

What is needed to set something like that?

if you have Discord, you can just hop on our RPGVienna Discord server and join a group call
e.g. #just-hanging-out

we just have to find a spec. evening when some of us have time

Or even lunchtime or late-night. Avoiding primetime might make this more viable, at least for me.
