Hi, my players asked me if i could put a small recap online but luckly the local newspaper already wrote an article about the adventure so ill just leave that here for them:
Disturbances at Crystal Lake Traced to Ancient Mirror Structure
Eldovar Gazette
Eldovar.
Unusual and unsettling events at Crystal Lake, one of Eldovar’s most popular tourist attractions, have prompted an official investigation by the city council. The lake, located beyond the Hornfelder Forest, has been temporarily closed to visitors following reports of injuries, strange creatures, and dangerous magical phenomena.
The first known incident involved a half-elven traveler, Iovan Trenwald, who reached Eldovar badly shaken after fleeing the lakeshore. While his wounds—caused by flying glass-like fragments—initially appeared severe, city healers later confirmed that they were largely superficial. Trenwald stated that he had escaped just in time using a teleportation scroll, after witnessing what he described as a creature emerging from the lake’s reflection “as if the water itself had shattered like glass.”
Following this report, the mayor of Eldovar commissioned a small group of adventurers—identified as Kex, Dorrik, and lokal young adventurer Mathilda—to investigate the disturbances and determine whether the Crystal Lake posed a wider threat.
According to information released by the mayor’s office, the group encountered multiple hazardous phenomena while traveling through the Hornfelder Forest, all believed to be side effects of a weakening magical boundary in the area. Witnesses reported flashes of concentrated light, sudden showers of razor-sharp reflective fragments, and unstable mirror-like surfaces forming along the forest paths.
One particularly alarming incident involved a glass-like owl briefly breaking through a reflective puddle before vanishing again. Though the creature did not attack, the act of crossing caused an explosive spray of glass shards that injured those nearby. In another case, the adventurers reportedly rescued a living spider trapped within a shimmering droplet of rainwater. Unlike other manifestations, the spider showed no signs of being a glass creature, leading investigators to believe it had been accidentally displaced due to the instability of the barrier.
After its rescue, the spider left behind unusual enchanted silk, later identified as suitable for enhancing footwear to allow wall- and ceiling-climbing—an effect consistent with the magical item commonly known as Slippers of Spider Climbing (Dungeon Master’s Guide pg 200). Additional discoveries included polished glass lens fragments, which experts believe can be used to construct Eyes of Minute Seeing, a magical optical device that enhances visual investigation (Dungeon Master’s Guide pg 168).
Upon reaching Crystal Lake, the group discovered an ancient altar-like mechanism near the shore. The structure featured several dedicated sockets, clearly designed to hold optical components. Before it could be fully examined, the investigators were attacked by a large glass owlbear, another creature believed to have crossed over as the boundary weakened. After defeating it, the group recovered a lens, two mirror discs, and a prism, which were placed into the altar’s sockets in their correct positions.
Activation of the mechanism revealed a hidden glass temple, accessible only through the lake’s reflection. Inside, the adventurers encountered Seres, an emissary of a mirror-bound realm known as Lusthalia, accompanied by several animated glass golems. According to reports, these constructs were actively channeling concentrated light into a massive mirror embedded in the temple floor, a process believed to have been intended to fully break the barrier between worlds. Seres reportedly identified herself as acting in service to Queen Aurelia Luminara, ruler of Lusthalia and referred to in arcane records as the Exalted Lady of the Mirror. Authorities now believe that the weakening of the barrier — and the strange phenomena observed throughout Crystal Lake and the Hornfelder Forest — were direct consequences of this ongoing ritual.
Further discussions revealed that Seres’ people sustain themselves entirely on light, and that the original goal of the operation was to invade Eldovar’s realm in order to harvest it as a resource. However, the confrontation took an unexpected turn when the adventurers offered Seres a Goodberry, marking her first experience consuming anything other than light. Sources close to the negotiations report that this experience led Seres to reconsider the invasion.
As a result, the attempt to break the barrier was halted, and peace negotiations have been initiated through the mayor’s office. While the long-term outcome remains uncertain, officials confirm that the immediate threat to Eldovar has been averted.
Citizens are still advised to avoid Crystal Lake and the deeper trails of the Hornfelder Forest until further notice, as arcane specialists continue to assess the stability of the area.
