# Creating VALUE characters

Hey, just wanted to ask some specifics.

1. Can I select the +2/+1 bump on character creation as per the optional rules in Tashas or do I need to take the race specific ones?

2. Do rangers use the PHB rules for their abilities or can I use the optionals from Tashas?

3. Generally speaking, how do I know if optional rules can be used?

I do know that the optional rules for the +2/+1 are allowed to be used. Don’t know for certain about the other two questions

Yeah, the optional rules from Tasha are allowed - you can assign the +1/+2 as you wish.

In general, all optional rules are allowed, including the Tasha ranger rules. The only restriction is that backgrounds cannot grant feats nor extended spell lists (meaning with a Strixhaven background you won’t get the background spell list nor the Strixhaven initiate feat).

Thanks! I read those, but i thought that since there is a general VALUE ruling for generating HP there might be a ruling on playing either with or without optional rules.
